Every pricing page for AI marketing automation quotes you the wrong number. They tell you $15 a month, or $79, or $299 for the tier with the AI features. Then eight weeks later you're looking at a tool you paid $960 for and a set of workflows nobody finished building, and the number that actually mattered — the one nobody quoted — was the 30 to 60 hours of human time required to make the software do anything.
I run a digital marketing agency, and I've watched small businesses buy automation platforms three times in a row and abandon each one. The software was never the problem. The budget line they didn't plan for was.
So here are the real numbers, including the ones that make the tools look worse.
What does AI marketing automation actually cost per month?
Software first, since that's the part you can look up.
| What you're buying | Realistic monthly cost | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Entry email + basic automation | $15–$70 | Mailchimp, Brevo, MailerLite. Sequences, tags, simple triggers. AI is mostly subject-line suggestions. |
| Real automation platform | $150–$400 | ActiveCampaign, Klaviyo, HubSpot Starter. Behavioural triggers, lead scoring, CRM sync, branching logic. |
| All-in-one SMB stack | $300–$500 | GoHighLevel-type platforms. CRM, funnels, SMS, booking, review requests in one login. |
| AI content and analysis add-ons | $40–$200 | ChatGPT Team, Jasper, predictive analytics or chat modules bolted onto the main platform. |
| One-time setup and migration | $500–$2,500 | Data cleanup, list import, integration wiring, template build. Charged by whoever does it — including you. |
Add it up honestly and a small business running two or three live workflows lands between $300 and $900 a month in the first year, all in. Not $15. The advertised price is real, but it is roughly 20 to 30 percent of what you will actually spend.
The gap isn't a scam. It's that the software prices the software, and the software is the cheapest part.
Why is the real cost three to five times the sticker price?
Because automation is not a product you buy. It is a process you encode. And nobody can encode a process you haven't defined.
